My previous work represented the application of the Becke-Perdew-Wang nonlocal density functional theory (DFT) method in constructing linear models for predicting essential reactions of metal ions in aqueous and surface systems. Linear free energy relationships (LFER) have been derived and were shown to be quite useful in elucidating the interrelationship among various reactions of metal aquo-ions. Subsequently, I applied conceptual DFT approach to investigate the solvent-induced shifts of the carbonyl (C=O) infrared stretching frequency of acetone in various organic solvents. Four types of reactivity descriptors were incorporated in a multiparameter equation for constructing the DFT-based linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) model.
Lai, Hung-Yu

Associate Prof. Hung-Yu Lai’s research is focus on the field of phytoremediation, biogeochemistry of heavy metals, and soil fertility. He has worked in the field of phytoremediation of heavy metals-contaminated soils for more than 15 years, especially for cadmium-contaminated croplands. Recently, he studied the bioavailability, translocation, and bioaccessibility of heavy metals in crops from the viewpoints of subcellular distribution and chemical forms.
Shen, Fo-Ting

Dr. Fo-Ting Shen got his B.S. and Ph.D. in Department of Soil & Environmental Sciences at National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. At present he is an associate professor working in the same organization mentioned above. His research areas include soil microbiology, ecology and microbial diversity, systematics and molecular phylogeny. Dr. Shen has conducted the polyphasic approach to perform classification and taxonomic study bacteria. Several primers used for specific detection of environmentally important bacteria, evolutionary markers and functional genes were developed by Shen’s team. The culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches were used in parallel to study microbial
diversity in various ecosystems. His research interests are exploration of agriculture- and industry-used microbial resources based on phenotypic and genotypic characterization, using culture-dependent and culture-independent approach. The future works will be the characterization of plant growth promoting bacteria and hydrocarbon degrading bacteria from academic and applied aspects.
Liu, Yu-Ting

Dr. Liu obtained her bachelor and master degree in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at the National Taiwan University, and her Ph.D. degree in the Department of Soil Science at the North Carolina State University. She has been serving at the Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences, National Chung Hsing University since 2015. Dr. Liu's professional expertise is in the field of biogeochemistry, environmental soil chemistry, analyses of trace-level contaminants, and molecular speciation of elements. She has extensive experience in analytical methods involving chromatography and atomic spectrophotometry, particularly for trace-level heavy metal contamination in various matrices such as water, air, sediments and sludge, tissues, and plants. She has also worked in the field of synchrotron-based analysis including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, transmission X-ray microscopy, and X-ray diffraction for over 10 years. She has gained the synchrotron-related experience from the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Agronne National Laboratory, and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the United States. Her work has significantly contributed to the development of the molecular mechanisms for biogeochemical cycling of elements.
